Muller-Kauffmann Tetrathionate-Novobiocin Broth (MkTTn) is a selective enrichment medium specifically designed for the isolation of Salmonella species from food samples, adhering to ISO 6579:2002 standards.

Developed by Muller and later refined by Kauffmann with the addition of ox bile and brilliant green, MkTTn Broth’s selectivity was further enhanced by Jeffries through the incorporation of novobiocin (40mg/L) to inhibit Proteus species.

This formulation ensures effective enrichment for Salmonella, making it a crucial step in food testing. Presumptive Salmonella isolates should always be confirmed using appropriate biochemical and serological methods, as detailed in the complete ISO 6579:2002 standard.
