This medium was chosen because the high salt concentration inhibits the growth of other Enterobacteriaceae, and the combination of vancomycin and sodium lauryl sulfate inhibits the growth of Gram-positive organisms.

Cronobacter (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii) is a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium that can cause sepsis, meningitis, and necrotising enterocolitis in premature infants, with a mortality rate of up to 40-80%. It is found in powdered infant formula and has a high tolerance to drying, increasing the risk of product contamination in powdered milk factories.
