Endo Agar

Oxoid™ Endo Agar

Isolate and differentiate Enterobacteriaceae from potable water, dairy products and foods with this differential medium.

Product Description

Endo Agar (Dehydrated), when used with basic fuchsin BR0050, is a highly effective medium for the isolation and differentiation of Enterobacteriaceae from potable water, dairy products, and other food samples.

Originally developed for Salmonella typhi, its primary application today is distinguishing between lactose-fermenting and non-lactose-fermenting intestinal organisms. This makes it ideal for detecting coliforms—a key indicator group for water and food quality, as well as spoilage potential.

Easy-to-read results:

  • Lactose-fermenting coliforms (e.g., Escherichia coli) produce characteristic deep red colonies that color the surrounding medium and often exhibit a golden metallic sheen.
  • Non-lactose fermenters form colorless, translucent colonies against the pink to colorless agar.
