Its formulation, based on Durham and Schoenlein’s work, promotes the rapid gas production from lactose fermentation characteristic of coliforms, while bile salts and brilliant green effectively inhibit Gram-positive and non-target Gram-negative bacteria, as well as anaerobic lactose fermenters.
